The chimney as an essential part of fireplaces belongs to the classical area of danger prevention in building construction. This has traditionally been considered by the building and during regulations of the Länder which are supplemented by specifications of technical details according to DIN 18160 part 1.*Chimneys are shafts built into or on to buildings which are exclusively intended for the purpose of carrying flue gases from fireplaces and discharging them above roof level into the open air. In order to take account of the various possibilities offered by the firing technology for buildings in use, a single chimney is intended to be considered as a standard chimney. for reasons of safety special basic requirements apply to chimneys.
