The document specifies the substitution method for the determination of the insertion loss, flow noise and total pressure loss of ducted silencers, splitter absorbers and duct elements (e.g. bends, T-connectors). Measurements are carried out in an artificially generated sound and flow field in third octave bands. It will generally be used in laboratories but may also be used for in situ measurements, provided that the plant complies with the requirements of this document. Characteristic quantities are determined by comparing measurements with the silencer and with a hard-walled duct in its place.
