The standard forms part of the multi-part standard DIN 18263. The door closers specified in DIN 18263 part 5 are component parts of a particular type of hold-open equipment. The doors are held in an open position to avoid continual opening and closing. In a fire situation, detectors respond to heat or smoke and release the hold-open device. The door closer then acts as a "normal" door closer as specified in DIN 18263 part 2 or part 3.
