The standard gives basic terms and definitions for metrology. The following concepts are defined and examples are given for their use: measuring, counting, testing, gauging, classing, sorting, dosing, adjustment, calibration and verification. Further definitions are given for the following concepts: measurand, measured value, error of measurement, result of measurement, object of measurement, influence quantity, principle of measurement and method of measurement. Methods of measurement are subdivided into direct and indirect methods as well as into analogue and digital methods.
