The standard describes a method for the determination of the esterified acid content, for example in solvents, oils, fats, fatty acids, natural and synthetic resins and plasticizers. The test portion is dissolved in a suitable solvent and saponified with alcoholic potassium hydroxide solution. The saponification conditions depend on the saponifiability of the product to be tested. The excess of the potassium hydroxide solution is titrated with hydrochlorid acid. From the consumption the saponification value is calculated.
