The standard is used to determine the magnitude of the parameters derived from Abbott curves. These parameters describe the increase in the material component with depth, within the roughness profile, and are used to assess the functional properties of mechanically highly stressed surfaces. The measurement conditions are based on experience with the manufacturing processes of grinding, lapping and honing. Before use with any other manufacturing processes, their suitability must be confirmed.
