The document specifies methods for making technical petrographic descriptions of natural stone. First a macroscopic description of the sample is undertaken. Then one or more thin sections prepared from the sample are examinated using a petrographic microscope in order to give a microscopic description of the sample. In addition, chemical or physical methods of analysis may be required for some stone types, but this are not described in the document.
