Deals with the requirements for a sufficient degree of radiation protection. It is not intended to define the optimum performance requirements for accelerators but to describe those design characteristics which are to be recognized as being important for a safe operation. Applicable to accelerators delivering an useful X-ray or electron beam at a maximum energy dose rate between 0.001 Gy/s and 1 Gy/s at a distance of 1 m from the radiation source. Appendix A contains an index of terms and their definitions.
